Pagans are adaptable?

Question: Do you think as magical folk we are a little more changeable because we already believe the universe and ourselves are Plasticine?

No………..and I dont wish to be mean but – Pagans by majority by and large tend to be what they call themselves as Liberals. Progressive Liberals. This should be seen as a good thing however I use the term in its modern application – they are the most backward, backstabbing, racist, xenophobic, mendicant, craven conniving little shits I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. A more wretched hive of scum and villainy you will be hard pressed to find.
The mere suggestion they can or will examine their ideas, much less change them is laughable. It is heresy most foul to them and they will seek to undermine and destroy anyone that challenges those ideas. This is identity politics 101.

Magickal folk on the other hand are what “They” define as mean, and fascist and mean and misogynist and and…………..loosely translated as – competent people adulting in a competent manner and being-shock horror – successful in their lives as they are successful in their magic/k

They are actually quite rare.

30 odd years at the coal face of paganism and the wider occult scene in 4 separate countries has established this attitude firmly in my mind. Ergo my circle is small and contains the exceptions.

This may sound unfair but the wider Occult scene attracts the dilettante, and the nutters like flies to a steaming bucket of manure. As such – to keep flies off the bride – we put said bucket in the corner.

The thing is – we know the attrition rate for noobs is about 15:1 at best. The Law may be for all – but magick is most definitely not. It will unhinge some, and others it will destroy. To Weather the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that goes hand in hand with the magickal process is a key strength of character that just doesnt exist in the common human being.

Thats me saying that any assumption that we collectively are better than others is just pure ego – it is no different to saying Xtians/Muslims/Jews are superior because they are chosen by god.

I get there is a societally programmed belief that people are basically good. I disagree and I cleave to Susan Sontag who said when interviewed by Vonnegut: “10 percent of any population is cruel, no matter what, and that 10 percent is merciful, no matter what, and that the remaining 80 percent could be moved in either direction.”

That means under the right circumstances, which tends to be the majority of the time – people can be some right shits.

People are basically rude, crude, brutish, and no more than 3 meals from out right barbarism, or worse – the outward manifestation of their utter inability to manage their own lives: voting labour.

Lets not forget – the Great Work is the most selfish act. It is not about Altruism, philanthropy, or being nice.

At all.

The apotheosis of self – can be terrifying, and the reality of loss is a fundamental part of that – grieving that old life is just not possible for some, and, nor should it be expected. People are people. I am reminded of Kipling:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!

How many people do you know that actively choose to do this. (many dont have the choice, and I salute them accordingly)

So no. Circumstance, breeding, character, and a host of other factors all contribute to that ability to grow, develop, evolve. Oddly enough a lot of the most competent occultists I know never had anything to do with the community.

Then there’s the crew that always try to be valid – the “That’s just like – your opinion mannnnn” – The Moral Relativist. They are pointless and lazy people IMHO who refuse to suck the marrow out of the very ideas they hold dear – they will not examine them. I look for universal truths – like death, gravity, taxes, and Hare Krishnas. It doesn’t matter where you are in our world – these are always present. It establishes that there are fixed points, but also provides a boundary for mutable ideas. It also means that when you are torturing a demon for being remiss in their duties as laid out in your contract with them – that you don’t get unsettled by their very very camp squeals of YES YES YES!! – and instead resolve to obtain their obedience unto another manner – like containing them in brass and playing Barry Manilow at them for 3 days. QED.

A truly horrible thing to do to be sure – but it got results.  In my experience – very few think outside of the box.
